Date Idea: Dark Dining

Ever heard of this idea out of Europe called dark dining? These restaurants have been created where the food is served in complete darkness and by blind waiters! Sounds crazy doesn’t it? Well, it has become quite the sensation and has made its way to the US. The point is to remove the customers sense of sight which allows other senses like taste and smell heighten. This allows them to appreciate the meal at a new level and also, in an interesting sort of experiment, experience the world of a blind person.
Try it yourself! The set up is simple enough but getting a room in the modern world pitch black can be tough. Every ray of light needs to be extinguished, you’d be surprised by how much light can sneak though the cracks. Thick black plastic bags and cardboard work great. Make sure all electronic devices and appliances are covered as well. Do a test run the night before. You won’t be able to fully scrutinize the area until your eyes have adjusted to the darkness, at least 15 minutes. So wait it out and remember, it’s extremely important to eliminate all traces of light or the results will be ineffective and your date unimpressed.
Surprise your guest by making the meal yourself or start the date early and make it together. Once the table is set and everything’s in place, it’s lights out!
Be careful about the foods you choose. Remember, you’re going to be in complete darkness so foods the require knives or attention should be avoided such as trying to saw away on steak or cracking crab legs.
